![]() ![]() By reducing the size of each page from the 1933 edition, this 1971 edition contains four original pages on each page (hence the magnifying glass). This two volume, compact edition contains the original 13 volumes of the OED from 1933. The Oxford English Dictionary has been the standard as THE historical dictionary of the English language as it not only gives you a thoroughly thorough definition but also the historical development and etymological roots and usage and variations of each word. From its charming drawer that contains the very necessary magnifying glass to its micro font to its hernia-inducing weight, this treasure trove of words has come to feel like an old friend. One of those loved possessions is my 1971 Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. The few things that I do own, I treasure with an irrational devotion. Because of this, my belongings are pretty sparse. See, I have a real phobia of the suffocating feeling of owning too many things. ![]() But I felt compelled to write a review (spoiler-free). A milk nurse sacrifices herself for a girl she nursed and loved as her own and a cherry tree gets planted for her sake called Ubazakura. ![]() The fourth story is about a motherly sacrifice. After many years and having suffered a loss of parents and wife Nagao reunites with the resurrected O-Tei. A girl O-Tei dies and promises her lover Nagao that she will come back to him in this life. ![]() The third story is about a reunion of a love couple in the form of resurrection. The second is about a hunter turning priest because he killed a male duck and the female duck came to his dream in a form of a woman and told him that she will kill herself because he killed her husband, and she did. The first story is about a man called Hoichi the earless because he got involved into a spirit trap he touched where he wasn't supposed to and the only way for his survival was to turn to a priest. The stories are fairly simple upon reading but evoke more considerable messages and views. Kwaidan is a collection of Japanese strange stories mostly based on supernatural superstition and Buddhist religious beliefs with a hint of history involved.
